World Bank President James Wolfensohn is in Manila as part of a six-nation Asian tour to assess the measures taken by the region in addressing its financial crisis.
On Friday he said the World Bank had earmarked a total of about one (b) billion U-S
dollars in loans for the Philippines for 1998 to help the country combat the crisis.
World Bank President James Wolfensohn arrived in Manila on Thursday and went straight to the presidential palace for talks with Fidel Ramos.
Wolfensohn's tour of the region is to assess the measures taken by governments of countries hit by the currency turmoil.
In a press conference on Friday, he expressed confidence that the Philippines would be able to overcome the present difficulties.

World Bank President James Wolfensohn is in Manila as part of a six-nation Asian tour to assess the measures taken by the region in addressing its financial crisis.
On Friday he said the World Bank had earmarked a total of about one (b) billion U-S
dollars in loans for the Philippines for 1998 to help the country combat the crisis.
World Bank President James Wolfensohn arrived in Manila on Thursday and went straight to the presidential palace for talks with Fidel Ramos.
Wolfensohn's tour of the region is to assess the measures taken by governments of countries hit by the currency turmoil.
In a press conference on Friday, he expressed confidence that the Philippines would be able to overcome the present difficulties.
He also said the World Bank had earmarked a total of about one (b) billion dollars in loans for 1998 to help the country combat its economic difficulties.
Among other things, the loans will be used to increase liquidity in the face of the country's currency problem and to soften the impact of the money crunch on the poor.
Wobbly financial markets, high unemployment and low liquidity are among the problems the government faces.
The bank is also worried about job losses through the effects of El Nino which has caused widespread drought.
